Shed Layout

This my friends, is perhaps the most important area to thoroughly think through when purchasing a storage shed.  Choosing the correct door and window placement can make the difference between having a structure that is very effective, or one which no matter how you store your items just does not have enough room.

For this example we will use a 10X12 storage shed.  So we are all on the same page, the 10' or first number is always the width of the storage shed.  The 12' or second number is always the length, or the direction that the 4X4 pressure treated runners are traversing.

Many customers like to match the layout of their homes by placing the double door and two windows on the 12' wall evenly spaced.  While this may look nice it is a very inefficient layout.  You are working with a total of 12', and in the middle of the 12' you place the 5' double door,  This results in you having only 3 1/2' on each side of the door.  Reasonably speaking your riding mower, or push mower, is going to be smack dab in the middle of your shed directly behind the double doors.  This proves to be a nuisance as not only do you have very little room on both sides of the door but you are now constantly climbing over the lawn mower to get to either side.

A great alternative is to off set your double door, or to place it on the gable end.  By doing so you know have a clear 6' of wall space next to the door which you can now effectively store your other items.

One other thing to consider is the grade of the land which we talk about more in a future post titled Site Work.  If you are not digging out your stone pad and placing the stone on top of your existing yard you want to be sure that you are placing the double doors at the highest point.  If your land slopes 7" from the high end to the low end (meaning you will have 4"-6 of stone" at the high point, and 11"-18" of stone at the low point), and you place your doors on the low end, they will be 18"-25" above the ground.  This will make accessing the shed much more difficult without having to construct an extensively long ramp.

When you stop by one of our 40 locations the manager will be more than happy to show you different layouts on the stock in our lot.  Many times seeing is believing and it will cause you to rethink the your layout.  And as always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call.

On behalf of the Pine Creek family we look forward to helping you in any way possible, with all of your storage needs.
