What to Consider When Choosing Your Shed

Choosing a shed or garage to purchase can be a big decision. Below are a few key points to think about when choosing the structure that's right for you, your property, and your storage needs.

Happy Customer Photo
What will you be storing inside? This will help determine what size and style of the storage shed you realistically need. It will also help you determine any added options you may need. For example: If you need a place to work on projects, you may choose to add a workbench with pegboard on the wall behind it. If you have seasonal items to store, you may desire a loft that allows you to hide them away and free up floor space. If you plan to store a lawn mower, ATV, or motorcycle, you may want to add a diamond tread plate to the threshold and also purchase a ramp.

What size do you need? Think about all the items you plan to store inside. Keep in mind, you want room to grow as well. Many customers often say 'I wish I would have brought a bigger shed' or 'I need another shed!' after a few years. We have never heard a customer tell us that the shed he or she bought was too big! If you are limited in the amount of yard space you have for a shed, consider adding lofts and shelving to your shed. This adds a ton of useful storage space without using up anymore yard space.

Storage Shed with extra double doors and ramps
Is there a door and window layout that works best for you? At Pine Creek Structures, you have a great amount of flexibility on door and window placement for no extra cost! When deciding window and door placement, think about where your shed will be at your home and how you will be using it. We can also customize your shed with extra windows and doors or even make them larger. If you plan to store large items (like an atv or side-by-side), measure the width and height. You'll want to make sure you doorway is wide enough and has enough clearance to safely move large items in and out of your new shed.

What style do you prefer? Sheds come in many styles. The style you choose can effect the cost, usefulness, and attractiveness of your shed. For example, a Dutch Barn (also known as a Gambrel Barn) has more overhead space than many other style sheds. Compared to a standard peak shed, a Cape Cod style shed is more attractive with a steeper roof, all around overhangs, and an extra door included standard. However a Peak style shed will be less expensive than a Cape Cod style. Learn about all our shed styles and the pros and cons of each here.

Snap a photo of your house with your cell before you leave. This will help you decide what color siding, trim, shutter, and roof to choose when you're at our store.Do you want it to match your house? Consider this when choosing the style, siding type, and colors of your shed. Make the color choosing decision easy... Snap a photo of your house with your cell before you leave. This will help you decide what color siding, trim, shutter, and roof to choose when you're at our store. If you are able, bring a chip from your home's siding so you can match with even more confidence!

Does your Home Owners Association or township have any requirements? Some HOAs restrict the size or colors of a structure you place in your yard. Many townships require a permit for your structure, but some may have other requirements as well. If your township requires building plans or any specific construction, let your local store manager know before you finalize your order. We'll help you make sure they building you order meet these requirements and that you have all the necessary information to acquire your permit.

Where will you place your structure? Our standard delivery is with a truck and trailer. If you have limited access or terrain that is difficult to cross, your shed can be delivered with our Shed Mule instead. If you have no access or access that is smaller than the width of your structure, our service team can build your structure on site. Also keep site prep in mind! Your new shed will require a prepared site that is level.  Also keep in mind: Your HOA or township may require your new structure to be a certain distance from your property line.

What is your budget? Purchasing a storage shed can be a big financial decision and we want you to be sure of that decision! The size, style, siding type, and extra options you choose are all factors in the price of your building. Pine Creek Structures requires a down payment when you place your order. The balance must then be paid upon delivery. If you are looking for a monthly payment rather than having to pay the full cost upfront, ask us about Rent To Own and Financing options. We offer a 36-month Rent To Own program with NO credit check on many of our products. We also offer two financing options for customers with approved credit. One program is ideal for customers who plan to pay of the loan quickly and want to avoid paying interest. The other financing program is ideal for customers who desire a low monthly payment.

Cape Cod Series

The Cape series of our storage sheds is by far one of the most popular styles.  It's classic appearance is not that of an ordinary storage shed.  The structure is enhanced with a steeper roof pitch as well as with 8" overhangs which offer extra protection from those harsh New England winters.

All Capes come standard with a double door, single entry door, and two windows.  This allows for easy access with larger items such as a lawn tractor through the double doors, and quick access through the single door for smaller items such as gardening tools.

Like all of our structures, you are able to choose the door and window location based on your storage needs or based on the location the building will be sitting in your yard.  76" studs are standard on all cape models.  The 10' wide series features an 8/12 roof pitch, the 12' wide series features a 7/12 roof pitch, and the 14' wide series features a 6/12 roof pitch.

The shed is available with LP Smart Siding, vinyl siding, cedar siding, log siding, and board or batten siding.  We are able to match the type of siding on your house, from basic custom color match to applying the same vinyl siding that your home has.

You are also able to customize the structure however you deemed fit, from electrical packages to work benches and shelves, if you can dream it, we can build it.

So stop by a Pine Creek Structures location near you to view one of these beauties in person!

Dog Kennels - Shelters for Man's Best Friend

Pine Creek Structures started manufacturing dog kennels a few years back as we realized that not a lot of companies offer such a product.  The response we received was fantastic and everyone from animal lovers to narcotic and bomb detection companies have since purchased them from us.

We off 3 basic sizes, however being the manufacturer we can custom make any size that you are looking for.

Our smallest kennel is the 4X8 single.  It features a 5x4 exterior run area with chain link panels and a gate along with a 3x4 enclosed area with an access door.  The decking on the exterior run on all of our kennels consists of a composite which makes it easy to wash.  You have the option of the size of the pet opening which leads from the interior to the exterior; either a 12"x15" or a 13"x19".

The next size we offer is the 8x8 medium double kennel.  This structure has 2 3x4 enclosed compartments which are separated with a wall.  The exterior runs on this kennel are 4x5 each, with chain link separating the 2 runs and with access gates to each one.

Our most popular seller is the 8X14 large double kennel.  This building has 2 4x8 exterior run compartments both with access gates.  It then has 2 3x4 interior dog boxes, and then a 3x8 feed area.

Many people ask, well what about the winter??  All of our kennels are available with the following options:

Small and large magnetic doors
Double bracket for feed and water bowls
Electrical package: 60 amp service, one double interior receptacle, one interior bulb, one light switch
Electric heat - 24" strip with wall mounted thermostat
Insulation and interior sheathing

Stop by a location near you today to find out how you can become dogs best friend.

Delivery Access

A vital question when ordering a storage shed; How much room do you need to get the building in?  A basic rule of thumb when ordering a structure is that we will need a minimum of 1 foot larger than the structure on all sides when bringing in the building.

By 1 foot larger that does not necessarily mean the size of the building, as you need to be made aware that some structures have overhangs which will increase the needed amount of space that we will need.  You also have to account for obstacles that are in proximity to the delivery path.  Since the shed is arriving in one piece we need the clearance to span the length of the structure.

If you are leery about the building being able to fit, then you are welcome to call one of our locations.  The manager will either take the time to come out to view the property, or in circumstances in which you are a couple of hours away they may ask you to e-mail pictures.

If we are unable to fit the building then rest assured, as all of our structures are available in kit forms and can be assembled on site for an additional charge.  Feel free to give us a call to talk about it more, or to schedule a time for one of our managers to come out and visit your property.

Storage Shed Lumber Quality

This can be a topic that as a consumer may never cross your mind.  A shed is a shed, all sheds are the same, all wood is the same - Wrong.

Many shed retailers or manufactures try to utilize lesser quality lumber in an attempt to cut their costs and add profitability to their bottom line.  They will never tell the customer this, or will talk around this topic and redirect your question to another aspect of their buildings.

Lumber quality has a huge impact on how a product is made.  Lumber is broken down into different grades, the lower number of the grade of lumber is a higher quality.  The better grade means less knots, less warping, and a stronger product.

This is the reason that at Pine Creek Structures we only utilize #2 or better premium grade lumber.  We need to ensure that the storage sheds will withstand the harsh New England Winters, and strong summer storms.  Other companies tend to use a lesser quality lumber, and staple shingles and collar ties.  We choose not to skimp on less expensive lumber, and nail these components to ensure longevity.

Stop by one of our many locations today and discover the value in person.

Pine Creek Structures - Standard Construction Specifications

I can not emphasize how important it is to understand how your storage shed is constructed.  This can determine the longevity of your shed as well as the strength of the actual structure.

We will utilize a 10X14 size shed to talk about how it is built.  The first number, 10, is the width of the storage shed, and the 14' is the length.  At the base of our structure you will have 5 premium grade 4x4 pressure treated runners.  These runners span the length of the storage shed.  Above these runners traversing perpendicular are premium grade 2x4 pressure treated floors joists spaced 16" on center.  So the joists are nailed to the runners, next the 5/8" LP Smart Flooring is installed and nailed to the floor joists.

All of our walls on our standard construction sheds are 2x4 16" on center.  We then uses double top plates and double studs in the corners both interlocking for additional structural supports.  Above the wall plates are 2x4 rafters with nailed gusset plates and collar ties 16" on center.  These both help to ensure that our storage sheds will exceed the recommended snow load in your area.

Our most popular siding is our 50 year LP Smart Siding.  This product is infused with a zinc borate so it is not prone to absorb waters and oils, resists fungal decay, and is termite proof; as LP states, "Bugs won't bug it".  All shingles are lifetime Timberline GAF, and all vinyl siding also holds a lifetime warranty.  In easier terms it will be the last building you purchase.

At Pine Creek Structures we stride to build our structures better as at the end of the day the quality of our product is who we are.  As a result we finish each shed with a quality control stamp to ensure that it meets or exceeds our standards.

Stop by one of our locations today and have one of our managers walk you the buildings to show you the quality in person.

Choosing the Correct Shed Size

There are quite a few very effective methods to determine how much room is enough room.  Let me start out by saying, there is no such thing as enough room!!  When storing items you have to be organized and efficient, as well as diligent to place things back where they belong.  Being in the storage industry for over 10 years, customers time and time again will often share the same sentiment..."I wish I went with a bigger shed".

The first thing to determine is exactly what you are putting in your shed.  Once you narrow down what is staying and what is getting thrown out, you now need to anticipate future purchases.  This is the one area that many people fail to explore.  If you have a push mower and know that in 5-10 years you will want a riding mower, take that into account.

For customers with garages that are full it is a little easier.  First off empty your garage and grab some masking tape.  Tape out the area of the desired shed size.  Next start filling that box.  Keep in mind that you will need room to navigate around larger items to gain access to the smaller items.  You will quickly realize that the empty 10X12 shed that you viewed on our lot may now not be quite large enough.

A great way to fit your possessions is to off set your double door.  By doing so you increase wall space and also ensure your mower will not be directly in the center,  By strategically using peg board, shelves, and storage lofts, you can easily organize the smaller items that you amy not use every day.

By using Pine Creek Structures interactive tool it will help you to determine how much can fit into your shed.  It's easy to use - just click on the link: Interactive Shed Sizer and then start dragging your items into the box.

As always we are here to help.  Stop by one of our many locations and our trained managers can show you the  size that will fit your needs.
