How much room is enough room??

OK,

So you have decided that you are in dire need of additional storage space. You have weighed your options, and discovered that paying a fee every month for an off site storage facility is ridiculous. My father always said, never pay for something that will not one day be yours, unless you are forced to.

Your next option is to purchase a storage shed. We have all been down this road, and we have all come to one very important question. How much storage space is sufficient for what I have?? The simple answer is there is never enough room. We will always acquire more and more stuff, but that is a whole other topic all together!!

Here is what I tell my clients when they are looking to purchase a storage shed.

1. What do you have?? Box out an area in your garage or back yard with the size of shed you are considering. Most reputable companies will come out to your home and take care of this for you. Once set up, start filling it up with the intended items you are thinking about storing. Keep in mind, hand tools and boxes can be stored in lofts as well as on the walls.

2. Where are you in life? Do you have children, are you thinking about having children? With these little blessings of life, comes more stuff. Plan ahead and anticipate any future buys, such as bicycles, larger lawn equipment, a pool table to get out of the house for an hour or two. (I love selling storage sheds, but do not want you to come back in a year because you purchased one too small)

3. Simple options make sense. When you are purchasing a storage shed, you more than likely will be paying anywhere from $18-$20 per square foot of space. Add a loft, for around $100 you gain 32 additional square feet. Shelves are the same concept; add a few to take advantage of your money.
